Sustainable Finance - Conceptual, International and Practical Perspectives

The International Law Section and the Business Law Section invite you for this Special Joint Seminar exploring current issues in Sustainable Finance.

The Australian Government’s Sustainable Finance Roadmap, developed by Treasury in 2023, included initiatives to improve transparency on climate and sustainability and build financial sector capabilities. The Seminar will explore the conceptual, international and practical dimensions of Sustainable Finance and the likely future of the Roadmap’s initiatives in a rapidly changing political environment.

Meet the Speakers

The Hon Justice Brian J Preston FRSN SC

Justice Preston is the Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales. Prior to being appointed in November 2005, he was a senior counsel practising primarily in New South Wales in environmental, planning, administrative and property law. He has lectured in post-graduate environmental law for over 30 years. He is the author of Australia’s first book on environmental litigation and 161 articles, book chapters and reviews on environmental law, administrative and criminal law. He holds numerous editorial positions in environmental law publications and has been involved in a number of international environmental consultancies and capacity- building programs, including for judiciaries throughout Asia, Africa and the European Union.

Justice Preston is currently a Visiting Professor at Durham University (UK), an Adjunct Professor at the  University  of  Sydney, Western Sydney University and Southern Cross University, and a former Visiting Fellow at Corpus Christi College and Magdalen College at Oxford University (UK). His Honour was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day Honour List 2025.

Linda Romanovska

Linda is a senior advisor on sustainability with close to two decades of experience delivering high-impact work on a wide range of sustainability topics through policy- making, standard-setting., research and consulting for a broad range of entities in the public and private sectors internationally.

Early in her career Linda worked within the European Commission drafting the inaugural European Union’s climate change policies, worked closely with the European Environment Agency and international supranational organisations, and her extensive expertise is recognised in her current high-level appointments supporting the drafting of sustainable finance and corporate sustainability regulations and standards for Australia, European Union, and elsewhere. Linda is a co-author of and contributor to the EU, Australian, ASEAN and other sustainable finance taxonomies, EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Standards, among others and serves on the ISO committee on sustainable finance standardisation. She is likewise known for her work on climate resilience, natural capital, socially just transitions and many other sustainability topics.

Lewis Grimm

Lewis Grimm has over two decades of leveraged finance experience working on marquee deals in New York, Europe, and Australia. He represents financial institutions, direct and institutional lenders, and corporate borrowers on cutting-edge domestic and cross-border leveraged and investment-grade lending as well as high-profile restructuring and bankruptcy matters.

Lewis's high-profile deals include assisting the majority term loan lenders in the restructuring of the U.S. facility agreement of Atlas Iron through an Australian creditors' scheme of arrangement. He also represented the majority secured term loan lenders in the chapter 11 cases of Southcross Holdings and its affiliated debtors.  Lewis was recognized by New York Metro Super Lawyers as a "Rising Star" for four consecutive years, designated by M&A Advisor as one of 40 leading lawyers under the age of 40, and named by The Legal 500 US as a "Next Generation Lawyer."

Siobhan Toohill

Siobhan Toohill is a corporate sustainability specialist having established and led sustainability functions in listed finance and property over the past 20 years. As chief sustainability officer at Westpac, her remit covered sustainability governance and strategy which included areas such as climate change, nature-related and human rights policies.

As a trusted advisor to business and government Siobhan is a member of the Australian Government’s Nature Repair Committee, AICD's Reporting Committee and NSW Divisional Council, NSW Anti-Slavery Commissioner’s Advisory Panel, and sustainable investment compliance committees. Previous appointments include co-chair of the UN’s Environment Program Finance Initiative’s Banking Board overseeing the UN Principles for Responsible Banking, member of the UN's Net Zero Banking Alliance, and deputy chair of the Green Building Council of Australia.

In 2024 Siobhan received the Australian Financial Review’s (AFR) 2024 Women in Leadership Award (Banking Category).
