Deputy President and Division Head of the Migration & Refugee Division Administrative Appeals Tribunal
Deputy President Jan Redfern PSM is Deputy President and Division Head of the Migration & Refugee Division of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. She was appointed to this role on 21 March 2016.
Ms Redfern previously served on the AAT as a part-time Senior Member from 2009 to 2014. During this time, Ms Redfern also worked as an independent consultant, served on several advisory committees, and was appointed a part-time legal member, then Deputy President, of the NSW Guardianship Tribunal. She was appointed as a Principal Member of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal's Guardianship Division and Appeal Panel from January 2015 before accepting the appointment to the AAT. Prior to these appointments, Ms Redfern held a number of senior executive positions with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission from 1999 to 2008, including as Executive Director of Enforcement. In 2007 she was awarded a Commonwealth Public Service Medal for outstanding service to corporate and financial services regulation and enforcement.
Ms Redfern was admitted to practice in 1983, serving as a partner of a national law firm for 10 years.
She also currently holds sessional appointments as a Deputy President of the Mental Health Review Tribunal and Senior Member of NCAT in the Administrative and Equal Opportunity and Occupational Divisions.
